Beginning in 2014, the Friends of the 457 spearheaded a drive to preserve the hillside on the north of the Rotary Cannonball in East Park where erosion was eating away at the foundation of the 457's depot platform.
Called the Cannonball Gardens and Educational Plaza, this major project to preserve the integrity of the hillside, and thus the platform beneath the 457, encompasses a major portion of the hillside to the north. Contributions from the public, businesses, and Park Board support have made it possible. Phase one of three phases began with the Ground Breaking Ceremony September 19, 2014, and the project was completed in June, 2017.
Memorial Contributions are still being accepted at City Hall, 10 1st St NW, Mason City, and may also be sent in care of Dennis Wilson to "Cannonball Gardens", 365 Sumac Rd, Mason City, IA 50401 for the "Cannonball Gardens" project.
Your donation will help preserve and beautify a very significant attraction in East Park by providing a dedicatory paver brick that will be set in the Plaza or steps. Many folks are making contributions in memory of someone.
