Cannonball Gardens Project Launches
Friends of the 457 have proposed the "Cannonball Gardens" for the north slope of the embankment where the Rotary Cannonball sits. The project, planned for completion as funds are available, kicks off this summer and may run for several seasons. Phase 1 will address the immediate need for protecting the NE corner of the Cannonball's shelter. The completed project will include terraces for sitting benches and picnic table, lamp posts, and brick walks and patios. Educational signage will help interpret history of East Park, Iowa Railroading, and the Orphan Trains. Approval of the project has passed the Mason City Park Board and funding efforts have begun. The goal is $125,000 for the completed project. Within a week of the announcement, pledges and donations already totaled over $3,000. The Park Dept. has committed $25,000 in Capital Improvement Funds. Donations may be to "Cannonball Gardens", 365 Sumac Rd, Mason City, IA 50401.
Your donation will help preserve and beautify a very significant attraction in East Park.
