Erosion Jeopardizes the 457

Inspection of the north side of the train shelter reveals erosion eating away at the hillside north slope, putting the locomotive platform and shelter "at risk" for significant damage.  The Park Board has been approached with a plan formulated by the Friends of the 457 asking for support for funding of retaining walls and landscaping that will serve the dual purpose of preserving the integrity of the hillside and foundation of the train shelter, and enhance the area for use by the public for picnicking and historical education about East Park. The Park Board acknowledged the concern and will present requests for budgeting to the 2014 Capitol Improvement process. Grants and donations will also be sought.

Ken Wind of Berglund and Cram, a long-time supporter of the 457 project, has offered assistance for developing the landscape design.

In the last three years, over 20,000 people have toured the locomotive, and in 2013 the Friends essentially "completed" the cosmetic restoration. The focus now shifts to preserving what has been accomplished for the community to enjoy for years to come. Addressing the erosion problem in an aesthetic and pleasing manner is essential.
